The Day of the German Language aims at increasing interest in German as a Foreign Language and highlighting the opportunities that knowledge of the language provides. These include increased employability with companies in Namibia and abroad, the opportunity to study or do vocational training in Germany, and better communication when traveling around the world. German is one of the top ten most spoken languages around the world.

Studying German at school thus provides the youth with skills that improve their private being and quality of life.

Initiative “Schulen: Partner der Zukunft” (PASCH)

This year’s Day of the German Language coincides with the PSS officially becoming part of a global network: PASCH (Schools: Partners for the Future) under the Goethe-Institut Namibia. The PSS will become one of seven PASCH schools in Namibia that benefit from skills and infrastructural development from the Federal Foreign Office.

Apart from the German Ambassador, Christian Schlaga, and the Director of the Goethe-Institut Namibia, Daniel Stoevesandt, representatives from all public spheres are expected at this event.

Background Information

Currently, 50 schools in Namibia offer German as a Foreign Language, while 11 schools offer courses in German as a Mother Tongue, including 5 secondary schools, one of which is the PSS. The school offers German as a Foreign Language and German as a Mother tongue from Grade 1 to 12.

The Day of the German Language is hosted every two years at a Namibian school, under the umbrella of the Goethe-Institut Namibia and the German Embassy.
