23.07.2024 - Press release

The German Embassy Windhoek is happy to announce that it supports the Deutsche Evangelisch-Lutherische Kirche (ELCIN-DELK) in Swakopmund with the renewal of the copper shingles and the church tower cross with funding to the amount of 25 000 EURO, approximately N$ 500 000. The funding is provided through the German Federal Foreign Office's cultural preservation program.

The remaining roof of the church building is currently being renovated before work on the church tower commences. This current renovation is financed entirely through donations from parishioners.

Background

The German Evangelical Lutheran Church was inaugurated on 7th January 1912. Since 1912, the church has had a Walcker organ, built a year earlier in Ludwigsburg, Germany. In 2021, the Embassy supported the restoration of the Walcker organ, again with funds from the cultural preservation program.

The church building had been identified as a National Monument on 21st September 1978. The historic cross of the listed church tower fell during a storm in 2023 causing substantial damage and therefore has to be replaced. Whilst assessing the damage to the cross it became apparent that the copper shingles on the roof also needed to be renewed.
