OYO carries out three days full of activism against GBV with dance performances, an exhibition, film screenings and inter-generational discussions in Okahandja, Usakos and Keetmanshoop.
The latter communities were particularly affected by cases of gender-related violence in this year, highlighting the need to raise awareness about and vocally stand up against GBV within the Namibian government’s public campaign 16 days of activism against gender-based violence (GBV).
OYO, with the financial support of the German Embassy worth more than N$ 260,000 (approximately Euro 13,500) will carry out multiple activities: Performances by the dance troupe, presentation of its exhibition “The Caring Namibian Man” and screenings of short films like “Be a Lady” or “Be a Man”. The aim is to encourage and facilitate inter-generational discussions and a mobile clinic and youth counselor will also be present at every stop.
When signing the funding contract on Wednesday 5 November 2025 with the director of OYO Dr. Philippe Talavera, Ambassador Dr. Thorsten Hutter said: “Gender-based violence is unacceptable. I am grateful to the Namibian government for addressing this important issue with a public campaign, and that the Embassy is able to contribute this year by supporting OYO’s renowned and excellent troupe”.
The Ombetja Yehinga Organisation (OYO) is a non-governmental organisation registered as a Trust T109/09 in Namibia. Since its conception in December 2002 OYO under the directorship of Dr Philippe Talavera has focused on the creation of awareness among Namibian Youth on social issues such as drug abuse, alcohol, teenage pregnancy, gender-based violence, discrimination and stigma.
