Helpful information for travelers with dual citizenship

What passport do I have to show when?

If you are traveling as a german-namibian from Namibia to Germany, the following rules apply:

  • The exit of Namibia is done with your Namibian passport
  • The entry to Germany is done with your German passport

For returning from Germany to Namibia it is the other way round:

  • The exit of Germany is done with your German passport
  • The entry to Namibia is done with your Namibian passport

These rules also apply to all other countries, where you want to travel to with your German passport.

I have different names in my Namibian and German passport. Does this cause problems?

If your names differ in your respective passports, you can still travel. However, it is advisable to carry at least (a copy of) your birth and/or marriage certificates so that you can easily explain the so-called “name discrepancy” should any questions arise.

Would you also like to use your name valid under Namibian law in your German passport? A name declaration may be required for this. You can find more details on this under Naming Law.
